Step 1: Create the Firebox
Drill ¾ in. pocket holes as proven and assemble the firebox with 1 ¼ in. pocket screws and wood glue. The earlier mentioned picture is the perspective from the back.
Here is the entrance perspective of the firebox. This will be the surface where the Intelligent Tiles will be put.
Step 2: Set up the Intelligent Tiles
Now it’s time for the pleasurable section: the tiling, but with out all the mess! The Intelligent Tiles came in a neat tiny package deal like this. They had been slim and versatile, like 3-dimensional stickers.
I chose the Metro Carrera Tiles. I couldn’t think how real they seemed!
I only peeled the backing off and pressed the tile into location. Peel and stick – so quick! No have to have for extravagant tools or messy grout!
The Intelligent Tiles occur with an overlap edge on just one side of the tile sheet. Stick the subsequent tile on to the earlier just one, covering the overlap edge. Push firmly to adhere.
When tiling about a convex corner, I only marked where the corner would be, then used a box cutter to rating a straight line on the tile. Use a straight edge to information your minimize traces.
Then I folded the tile where I scored it and only peeled the backing and caught it in location.
I continued to set up the Intelligent Tiles till the complete surface of the firebox was covered. Quickly, I was still left with this beautiful thing.
So rather, right? This has been the easiest and fastest tiling work I’ve at any time finished!
Step 3: Create the pillars and header
After the Intelligent Tiles had been put in, I completed developing the relaxation of the Do-it-yourself faux hearth. The foundation of the hearth is a simple box crafted from MDF.
The subsequent step was to make the pillars and the header. Here are the two pillars. Once once more, I used pocket hole joinery here.
I painted a scrap sheet of ¼ in. plywood with black chalkboard paint and connected it to the back of the firebox with 1 in. staples and wood glue. It would be so lovable to draw a crackling fire and some logs on to that chalkboard, wouldn’t it?
Then I dry-fitted the components to make absolutely sure all the things match properly and connected the pillars to the foundation with these Simpson Powerful-Tie framing angles. Now it’s time to insert the mantel. I put the mantel on best and connected it to the hearth with 2 in. countersunk wood screws. I extra the decorative molding to the deal with of the hearth with 1 ¼ in. brad nails and wood glue.
Step four: Paint the hearth
Finally, in advance of portray the MDF, I taken off the tiled firebox and established it apart. For the reason that MDF tends to take in paint pretty a bit, I sprayed a couple of coats of primer in advance of spray-portray it white. Even with the primer, I had to use 3 coats of spray paint.
Once the paint was dry, I extra the firebox back in, attaching it to the foundation with a lot more framing angles.
I enjoy how it turned out! For a a lot more crafted-in look, you can connect matching baseboards. The Intelligent Tiles insert such magnificence and class to this Do-it-yourself faux hearth and set up was rapid and simple.
